He codes that: (1) Germany will go to war after the

Autumn harvest (2) America has had many internal

troubles and (3) the older Japanese statesmen can

still be influenced to bring about a temporary

compromise,

meaning that in 6 months time Britain

will be in a position to send her battleships (China

Fleet?) to Singapore.

31 is dated 1.8.39, MA hints that he is in

danger. He says that TATJIRA the Japanese Consul

in Hong Kong had told Kerr that he (MA) is of a

prominent anti-Japanese leftist element and closely

connected with the K.M.T. and the Communist Party and

requested Kerr to pay attention. MA said he had

received an intimidatory letter and his work might

become affected.

32 tells ma to carry on his work no

matter in what circumstances, and that if Kerr enquires

about the peace atmosphere in Chungking, MA can tell

him it is absolutely untrue.

35 MA says he will carry on his work

(dated 8.8.39).

He learns that keer will return to

England after his trip to Chungking and Britain's Far

East policy will be re-considered.

34) again refers to kerr returning to

England after visiting Chungking, but in a mintue in
